Hi,
We have participated in the Hilton Head CBC twice. The first time was
about 7 years ago and many of the participants that we were with did not
know their birds. They reported such things as 'large blue heron' and '
large white heron'. I think the other groups had better birders (at least
I hope so!). We were so disappointed that we did not help for a couple of
years. It seemed so useless for us to be careful when others did not know
what they were seeing.
Then we went back about 3 years ago and birded Pickney with some good
birders and some novices. And one of the good birders (who participates in
BBS in PA) did see an Eastern Kingbird. When I sent the list in to someone
in CBC (I forgot who) they called me to verify the sighting. I referred
them to the birder who reported the Kingbird. I do not know the results.
Hilton Head is almost in GA - and some neotropicals do winter there. But
CBC participants do need to be more careful. Sometimes, especially in a
resort area, the volunteers do not live here year round and do not know
what to expect in this area.
I wish Hilton Head would include their count dates with the rest of CBC.
Sometimes there is just a small note in the local paper. Anyone on HHI
listening?!?
