Fwd: Southern OBX CBC Date Changes

Cbirders,

Peter Vankevich asked me to post the message below to carolinabirds, but
first I cannot help but editorialize. The Ocracoke and Portsmouth counts are
a lot of fun. We do not get the birds that other coastal counts do --
probably because of the smaller land masses, less diverse habitat, a small
number of counters and televised college football -- but, I can tell you we
have fun trying.

Come join us. Portsmouth Island is a place every North Carolinian should
visit and late December is the time to do it. The main reasons are fewer
mosquitoes and fewer tourists. The same is true for Ocracoke, which will be
our base. Pete has made the arrangements to get us over to Portsmouth the
morning of the count and back to Ocracoke by before dark that day (limited
time is a factor in this count's species totals, too).

Peregrine, Merlin, piping plover are expected. Two years ago we had a barn
owl and a red-necked grebe(ND as per HL). Last year I got five species of
wren along one dirt road. Counters also had a sora and a lark sparrow.
Something neat and unexpected could also pop in this year, as well. Why
don't you?

Hi Hal:
Congrats on finishing the first semester. The new house which is near
the Lark Sparrows will be available from Monday the 27th till Monday, the
3rd. I will be heading down on Tuesday, the 28th. Finally got a camera and
will be doing some photography. For more info on the house, contact Jule
Simpson at: julie.simpson@bvgraphics.com for details. I just got
confirmation tonight from Kathleen O'Neal that Rudy will be able to take us
over to Portsmouth on the 30th. The Park Service will be able to help only
on Thursday, the 30th.

Could you post this on Carolinabirds?
