Stone Mountain CBC

We had a great count on the first day of 2000. Highlight of the day was a
Merlin that allowed us to get great views with our spotting scope. For
those that might want to try to relocate, it was in Wilkes Co., NC, about 2
miles SW of Austin at the intersection of SR1934, Lomax and SR 1935, King
Billings Roads.

It was also a good day for White-crowned sparrows. They seemed to be in
almost every suitable habitat. Many of the locations had one or more
White-crowns in full song. Our total count for the day was 57.

Other "good birds" for this count were:

Common snipe - 4
Red-breasted nuthatch - 3
Pine warbler - 1
Red-shouldered hawk - 2
Swamp sparrow - 5

Our count of 15 Red-tails was also excellent for this area.

I also spent a couple of hours trying to (unsuccessfully) relocate a
Saw-whet owl that was found on the Stone Mountain CBC by Jim Keaton.
Location was on the Blue Ridge parkway in a Rhododendron thicket, 150 meters
SW of MP235. Jim found the owl, with a lot of persistence, after noticing
mobbing behavior by small birds. He later showed the owl to James Coman and
a reporter from the local newspaper. She took photos and I believe one will
be included in this weeks edition of the Alleghany News. Great bird Jim!

Sorry for the late posting. It's been a busy New Year.
