The Winston-Salem NC CBC was held on a very warm Jan 2, 2000. The
temperature started at a low of 47 degrees and topped out at 64 degrees. We
observed 79 species count day with an additional 4 count week. Ring-billed
Gulls gave us a new count high at 3914 and we had a modern times high of 7
Red-headed Woodpeckers. Total individuals seen were 12700 which is high for
our circle in years without a blackbird roost. The irruptive species were
represented with 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches, and 19 Purple Finches. The most
unusual finds were a Common Yellowthroat (These usually leave our area
around the first of December) and a Vesper Sparrow. The biggest miss for
the count circle is the Ross' Goose which can still be seen on Temple School
Road about 2 miles outside of our circle. For directions I have added a
previous e-mail I sent out when the bird was first located.
Hop Hopkins found a Ross' Goose on the south end of Temple School Road on
Friday Dec, 31st. The bird was still present on 1/2/2000 mixed in with a
large flock of Canada Geese. Temple School Road goes east off Union Cross
Road between I-40 and US311, then turns to the south and intersects High
Point Rd. about a mile west of the intersection of High Point Rd and Union
Cross Rd. We went on US311 toward High Point. Exited at Union Cross Road,
turned left back over the bridge. At first intersection with a stop light
turn left (High Point Road). Temple School Road is on the right. The Goose
was seen shortly after turning on the road next to a house with a pond
behind it. They can be seen anywhere in this vicinity. There are cattle in
the field in
front of the pond. All of this is private property so do not go into the
fields and pull
well off of the road when viewing. American Pipits can also be seen in the
fields in this
area.
