A quick jaunt this morning to the Little Creek Impoundment became a long
foray as Doug Shadwick generously volunteered to show me the Stagecoach
Road impoundment where I might, finally, get this year's Prothonotary
Warbler. I had never before been able to find the Stagecoach Raod
Impoundment and so I was very eager. The minute I left Doug and entered
the impoundment an Osprey flew by very leisurely, and before I had quite
stopped tingling all over a Blue Grosbeak landed on top of a maple, sang
as though to get me to identify it positively, perked its body in that way
which Blue Grosbeaks have (and Indigo Buntings do not), and then flew
on. Red Headed woodpeckers seemed to be holding a major convention, with
at least four flying and calling back and forth. And then, while trying to
locate a singing Redstart, a parula flew in and sang in the middle story
(for once i did not wrench my neck trying to locate it). And then while I
was reeling from all of this, an adult Bald Eagle flapped purposefully
by. But before I had time to take it all in, my eye caught a speck of the
most intense Blue in the new maple leaves--an Indigo Bunting. No
Prothonotaries, but what a morning! Many of these were for me Millenium
birds, for I have wiped clean my ABA slate and begun to bird as though
a beginner from the first of January. So, can anyone help me get my first
Prothonotary or Yellow Throated Vireo--time's running out before I leave
for India for the summer.
