Adequate equipment is certainly a worthwhile purchase, although not ALWAYS
required. I was at a Scout event last weekend and was standing by myself
near the road waiting for the rest of my group. I heard a bird commotion
from the bushes on the opposite side of the road. Two birds rose from the
bushes and ascended straight up in a close fight. My first thought looking
at the silhouettes was cowbirds. But wait, they were blue! Two male Blue
Grosbeaks in a death match. They ascended, clashed, fell a ways, ascended
to about 40 feet and locked together. Shoooop! BLAP! Straight down into
the road. They tussled, then separated and headed for the trees, one
chasing the other at full tilt. Blue Grosbeaks, very close, easily
identifiable, no binocular in hand. Now would be the time for some
inappropriate crack over political infighting. Well, never mind that, they
were probably fighting over a girl.

Keep looking, you will see them, then you will see them EVERYWHERE.

Wishing you luck,
