Re: ABA or Not, Barnacles Still Here
At the risk of exposing my rather ample ignorance, I'd argue for a little
bit of Occamesque thought: given the commonality of captive/domestic
Barnacle Geese wrt. the relative scarcity of wintering records EVEN in the
far NE, I'd think you'd have to simply assume the Barnacle Geese to be
escapes until proven otherwise - it's simply the solution which is
predicated on fewer difficult assumptions. I'm not even sure why you'd want
to argue otherwise (other than really wanting a lifer, like me :-) ).
And as for comparing to the Mango, I'd say it's apples and oranges - from
what I've seen on listservs, the Mango is NOT a commonly kept cagebird, so
that is not nearly so viable an explanation in this case. The likelihood of
an immature bird wandering offcourse notwithstanding, once again, to argue
that the Mango IS an escape requires too many exceptional circumstances,
IMHO.
So I really don't have an issue with the chips falling where they may...
Happy Birding!
