Gary--while shopping (all day) with my family on Saturday afternoon--I
noticed a small grebe among the scores of Mallards, Ring-billed Gulls and Am.
Coots, in the large lake in the midst of Broadway-at-the-Beach. I did not
have binocs, but as the bird swam underneath the bridge, the range was no
more than 8-10 feet. It was in winter plumage. The dark "mask" on the face
extended well below the obvious orange eye. The bill was quite thin and
slightly uptilted at times. There was a prominent blackish streak from the
crown down the back of the neck and onto the back. The bird appeared
somewhat lighter on the flanks than most horned grebes. I was impressed that
the bird had a shorter neck than Horned Grebes. I have not seen any grebes
there before, except for Pied-billed.
I don't think I'll be able to get up there today, but if you get a
chance--check it out. I didn't have a camera along, and had reservations for
dinner and Rockettes. If you find it, let me know what you think. Feel free
to call me at work 293-2300 or at home 651-9204.
