Goldsboro surprise gull

As part of the group that steve schultz mentioned in
his recent posting, I was going to report about the
changes at the treatment plant, but I have been
pre-empted. So instead I present a gull.
Our rapid locating of the whistling duck and an
equally rapid location of the cinnamon teal would have
made for a good day all by itself but we decided to
push our luck and look for the vermilion flycatcher.
We did not find it, but there were perhaps 1000-1500
gulls standing in the fields around the area. I
remarked that it was unlikely that any unusual gulls
would be in the group but then added that we
definately wouldnt see anything if we didnt look. That
remark quickly proved to be prescient as I noticed a
darker gull than the surrounding ring-bills and
herrings. The bird was larger than a ring-bill but
smaller than a herring, its mantle was dark gray. The
legs were yellow as was the bill which was large with
a big red spot. The head was heavily streaked in
brown, especially around the eye (which had a yellow
iris). A lovely adult Lesser Black-backed Gull.
A cold and sometimes rainy day, but very successful.
