Re: Raleigh CBC
Randy Emmitt, Kent Fiala, Gordon Brown, Rachel Harden, and I covered the
western half of Lake Wheeler on the Raleigh CBC. Here's a description of
the area: http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/tbg/wheelermarsh.html
It was not the most fun weather (cold, damp, and foggy) for slogging around
in a marsh, but we had a few good birds, including a flock of 20 Redhead and
2 Common Loons from the Penny Road causeway, 3 Loggerhead Shrikes (2 in the
Blaney Bluffs neighborhood, 1 on Old Sorrell Rd.), and 2 imm. Baltimore
Orioles traveling together off Old Sorrell Rd. Sparrow numbers were way
down from what they usually are in the Lake Wheeler marshes and we failed to
get a Virginia Rail to respond to a tape. Duck numbers and diversity at
Lake Wheeler are still very low compared to what they were 4-5 years ago.
We ended up with 54 species, a little lower than normal for this area.
Unfortunately I don't recall what other goodies were reported at the
countdown.
