Lkae Osceola, Lake Julian

Folks,
The spectacle has begun on Lake Osceola. Due to cold weather, and
local ponds and lakes freezing over, hundreds of ducks have appeared at the
lake. The following birds were there this AM: 200 Mallards 2
Hooded Mergs 2 American Wigeon
                          4 Green-winged Teal 14 Black Duck 15
pied-billed Grebes
                          25 Ring-necked 2 Bufflehead 2 Ruddy

I checked Lake Julian in Buncombe County this PM and had the
following:
                        18 Bufflehead 14 Hooded Mergansers 1
Gadwall
                         300+ Canada Geese 40 Mallards 2 American
Pipits
The Pipits were feeding in the grass and red clay on the spit by the
playground and picnic shelter at the waters edge in Lake Julian Park. It
was interesting to watch the Pipits feeding in amongst the domestic and
Canada Geese that were picking corn off the ground. They appeared to be
tolerating each other quite well considering the size differential!
