Folks:
As a reminder, the upcoming Cape Hatteras CBC is December 27, a
Wednesday. As usual, I will hold party assignments the evening before,
at the Cape Pines Motel in Buxton (probably in Room 11), around 8-8:30
pm. Hope to see some of you there. Hopefully, the unusually cold weather
will push more waterfowl and gulls to the area, which is typically the
case at the cape. With Audubon not planning to publish full results this
year, there is more impetus to just go have a good time -- looking for
rare gulls and rare seabirds, or rare landbird strays, than simply
beating the bushes and marshes for one of this sparrow and that to add
to the list. This count isn't about a large species list anyway, and the
list varies very greatly from one year to the next, depending on weather
and a lot of other factors. It's about what rare gulls can be found at
Cape Point, what rare stray warblers and other songbirds can be found in
Buxton Woods, and hopefully what hummers besides Ruby-throateds can be
found at the local feeders, among others.
