A screech owl strikes me more the pickup-truck kind of bird rather than the
SUV-type that Len Pardue reported from his carport in Asheville. And I've
got an SUV-bird to trade him. This morning I looked out in the 19-degree
cold and saw the mockingbird that just arrived in my woods-clearing last
week. (This is just the third one I've seen in my yard in 15 years, and the
only one to stay more than an hour or two.) The mocker was perched on a
stick of oak firewood in the back of my Ford Ranger -- wood I'd piled in to
give the truck traction in case it snows. Then the mocker perched on the
edge of the truck bed. Then it flew up to the top of the cab and sat there
for quite a while. Clearly it was getting the feel of the truck. But was it
happy? Well, I can't really see this dashing, elegantly proportioned bird
preferring a slow, out-of-style pickup truck unless said truck was the only
vehicle available and happened to be parked next to a fruit-bearing holly --
which about describes the situation. But a little Alfa Romeo convertible?
Now you're talking! And failing that? A Trooper would do nicely. (Of course,
both would be ideal.) Len, I'll trade you my bird for yours. How about it?
