C'Birders:
A thorough check of the lakes around here revealed no Cinnamon Teal. Darn.
Hurried down to the lake edge at first light and....the Cooper's Hawk flew
up from the ground where last night's meal had been and landed in a tree.
He was not carrying anything and the carcass was gone except for feathers.
There was a raccoon in the yard.
Today I studied all the features a young male Black-chinned HB should have:
Pumping tail, check; Flat dull gray-green head, check, check; very long
wings almost to tail edge, check. The purple necklace (scientific name) has
still not filled in on right side, but I imagine there is one more feather
out.
This was the only hummer I saw today, but thought I might have heard and
seen a chase that immediately went over the house.
Green winged teal floated by. The only species missing from my lake that
Twin Lakes had were Ruddy Duck and Shovelers.
Good bird counting,
