On 21 December, a bluebird day, I spent the afternoon at Bird Shoal (Rachel
Carson Reserve), just south of Beaufort, NC.
I counted 17 Piping Plovers there, the most I've seen at that site in winter
in many years. However, there is some movement of this species between Bird
Shoal and nearby Shackleford Banks, so this number does not necessarily
suggest a wintering increase for the entire inlet area. I didn't have a
scope, so couldn't tell if there were any banded birds.
A nice bonus was a perky Lincoln's Sparrow at adjacent Carrot Island. This
bird was at a site with low shrubs (live oaks, wax myrtles, silverling) over
marshy ground (black needlerush, saltmeadow grass, plus more upland ground
cover species), with numerous bare spots created by the horses. Numerous
Song and Swamp sparrows here.
