Yesteraday afternoon, 7 January, I was leaving the Elizabethan Gardens near
Manteo, NC, after a frustrating two days of goshawk searching, when Skip
Hancock spotted the (or one of the the) Warbling Vireo. It was feeding low
in the branches of laurel and live oaks on the east (= sunny) side of the
large lawn that lies in the middle of the gardens. We (Skip, Linda Ward,
and I) then watched it closely for several minutes, sometimes having it next
to a Ruby-crowned Kinglet for comparison. I went to get a tape recorder in
an attempt to get it to sing or scold, but it disappeared before I got back.
Wow! This is certainly one of the strangest bird sightings I've ever
witnessed.
This bird was a lifer for Skip and Linda--a lifer Warbling Vireo in NC in
January!!
The bird has obviously handled the recent cold.
