The western tanager that appeared at the backyard birdbath on New
Year's Day has not been seen again by my wife and me. I thawed out
the bird bath at lunchtime on the days that it froze overnight, and I
watched as much as I could both at lunch and after I got home from
the office. I was home Saturday afternoon, following a trip to
Weymouth Woods in Southern Pines but no tanager. Yesterday I had to
reset my feeders to take care of a new squirrel problem, so anything
unusual was probably frightened off by my activities.
I'll keep watching but I'm not hopeful. The squirrels forced me
to move to the back burner my plans to set up a fruit feeder.
