Hi again,
I forgot to mention something sad I saw on the 7th at Lake Lynn in Raleigh.
Mom and I were taking our weekend walk, when I looked down the bank and
spotted something on top of the ice. I clambered down the bank, and saw that
it was a dead female Mallard duck.
Her entire body lay on top of the ice, except for the one leg I could see.
The leg was encased in the ice. She didn't seem to have been attacked or
bitten or anything, just laying very peacefully on her side.
The only thing I can figure is that she fell asleep and got frozen into the
lake. How she died, I couldn't say. Maybe froze, or starved, depending on how
long she was stuck. But I would hope that a passer-by would have helped her
if they had seen her struggling to get free.
Sometimes Mother Nature is a mean old b****. :-(
