Hi Carolinabirders,
The Litchfield-Pawleys Island CBC results have been finalized and I am
hopeful that they will be accessable through Bird Source by the middle of
next week. The 30th L-PI count, Dec 28th 2000, found 156 species and
27,731 individuals. The 156 species is third only to the 158 on the 99th
count and the 157 of last year's count. Two birds were new for the count:
BLUE GROSBEAK and White-crowned Sparrow. Other bold faced birds were these
birds seen for only the second time on this count: ARCHILOCUS SP, LE
CONTE'S SPARROW , Lesser Black-backed Gull, and Eurasian Collared Dove. The
Eurasian Collared Dove was seen at the south end of Garden City Beach for
the second year in a row and because it was seen all last year in this
location is probably established there. Lex Glover also had two in
Litchfield. It looks like this species will be a regular in future counts
for L-PI. In addition we had some great count week birds in that now
"famous sparrow clear-cut" near Samworth: YELLOW RAIL, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW
and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
There were 37 field observers in 15 parties, which was about normal for
the last ten years of this count. We also had June Hora and Gerrie
Browning watching their feeders and backyards in Murrells Inlet and Pawleys
Island respectively.
Considering the weather with light rain/drizzle in the AM and some brisk
wind (though not as bad as last year)in the PM, I feel we (meaning all 39
of us) did real well. Our needs which have been unmet for many years now
are; for a volunteer with a boat to take some observers out into the 1/3 of
the circle which is rarely covered-the ocean, and a feeder watcher in the
Plantersville area. The count seems to be firmly in the coveted 150 range
and given a few more experienced observers, getting the ocean boat and the
needed feeder; WELL 160 ANYONE!
