Digital photography

Thanks so much to the folks who have written requesting information on the use
of a digital camera and spotting scope. I'm thrilled that some of my pictures
have turned out! I've added some additional shorebird pics from Huntington
Beach at: http://www.tropicbird.homestead.com/Shorebirds.html

A little history: We looked at several models of digital cameras with the hopes
that one would take decent pictures through he spotting scope. We could not
find any that would in my price range (under $400). I gave up until I saw the
DC3200 at Office Depot for $149. I figured at that price it would be a fun toy.
After some tinkering I was surprised to find that it would work in conjunction
with the spotting scope by using the 2x zoom feature. I set the camera on zoom
and hold it up to the eyecup on my 20x LER lens (it works better than the 15-40x
zoom). The only real disadvantage is that the pictures have to be taken on the
low resolution setting to use the zoom so one cannot do much in the way of
enlargements. With a more expensive camera the results should be even better
(as evidenced by some of the shots Eric Dean and others have posted). In
looking at one of these "better" cameras an important feature is a macro setting
that allows for close-up photos. It is this setting that seems to produce the
best shots. For whatever reason, my camera's 2x zoom seems to achieve similar
results.

I'm thrilled that the digital cameras seem to function well when used in this
capacity. I've tried on and off over the years to mate a 35mm SLR to a spotting
scope and astronomical telescope with marginal results.

Good luck!
