Hi carolinabirders,

These topics seems to come up every so often on the list (what plants to
use to attract birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies and where to get
them), so I'll go ahead and answer publicly in case anyone else is
wondering.

Will Cook has put his recommendations for bird and butterfly plants on
the web at http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/plants4birds.html and
http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/plants4leps.html respectively.

Someone at NC State put together a network of web pages called "Working
with Wildlife" devoted to improving habitat in yards and other
properties. Start with "Herbaceous Plants for Wildlife" at
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/forest/steward/www24.html and then use the
links at the bottom of the page to explore other topics. Or skip straight
to Bobwhite at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/forest/steward/www8.html or
hummingbirds and butterflies at
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/forest/steward/www20.html

The North Carolina Botanical Garden at UNC-Chapel Hill has periodic
native plant sales, and is the headquarters of the NC Wildflower
Preservation Society. See http://www.unc.edu/depts/ncbg/ and
http://www.ncwfps.org/index.htm
They also have compiled a list of "Recommended Sources of Native Plants
and Seeds" at http://www.ncwfps.org/sources.htm

I also see mention, in one list of state native plant societies, of a
Yellow Creek Botanical Institute in Robbinsville, NC. Anyone know
anything about them?

Niche Gardens in Chapel Hll carries many native species and has a web
site at http://www.nichegdn.com/
Green Plant Market, Inc. specializes in plants native to the southeastern
US; their web address is
http://www.wegrowit.com/greenplant/GreenPlantMarket.html
I also found a page for "Mail-Order Natives" with a snail-mail and e-mail
addresses, but don't see any on-line catalog. See
http://www.mindspring.com/~plants/natives.catalogue.html

We-Du Nurseries at http://www.we-du.com/ is based in Marion, NC and also
sells some native plants.
Elk Mountain Nursery in Asheville seems to sell mostly nonnative species,
but has a "Butterfly and Hummingbird" section in their on-line catalog at
http://www.elk-mountain.com/cata/cultlist/butthum.html

For folks south of the border, the South Carolina Native Plant Society is
on-line at http://cufp.clemson.edu/scnativeplants/index.html

Happy planting,

Josh
