In the last few days, I've talked to a few people who have had wintering
hummingbirds (all or almost all are Ruby-throateds, based on the
descriptions I hear) in Carteret County, NC. Have not heard of any birds
that have died or apparently died. Sounds like these birds did OK during
the persistent cold of late December-early January, when there were numerous
freezes, a couple of overnight lows around 20, and a a few days when the
highs were only in the 30's. Perhaps important to the hummers, many of the
cold days were bright and sunny, and a hummer perched in a dense shrub out
of the wind could probably stay warm.
