In response to Brian Murphy's note re: sources of wildlife planting
materials, I recommend that anyone so interested contact the district game
biologist of N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (I don't know who this
would be in the RTP area) and ask for the list "Commercial Sources for
Wildlife Planting Materials". This list is usually available also in the
County Extension office and NRCS office, though possibly out-of-date
(better check). There will be 20 to 30 suppliers on this list.
Also, contact the local N.C. Forest Service office for a current list of
tree seedlings and transplants available. You will have lots to choose
from, in my experience very good quality and relatively inexpensive.
As someone has commented, letting natural succession take its course,
combined with selected planting to improve cover and food, and carefully
timed mowing, will work wonders in a few years' time on "beat-up pasture".
I know, as I have plenty myself.
