  yes, Grt. Grays are a far north variety and huge (much larger than 
crow-sized); what you almost certainly saw/heard were Barred Owls, now 
commonly-found in local residential areas and making many different calls 
besides their signature 'who cooks for you', especially this time of yr. as 
they prepare to breed; and like other owls they have the wonderful silent 
flight you referred to.

  Speaking of which :-) UNC's b. owls are currently sleeping away most days 
in their favorite holly trees along northwest edge of quad if anyone wants 
an easy daytime look at owls (sometimes both, sometimes male alone).
