Evidently, we didn't look in the right place for a Tufted Duck, and the
rest of the day was rather uneventful. At Bodie Island Lighthouse, we saw
one American Water Pipit in the grassy area within the traffic circle at
the HQ building. The pipit was close to a small flock of Kildeer. Some GC
Kinglets were observed in the pine trees near the circle, as well as some
meadowlarks.
Nothing of note on the "paved" trail off the park entrance road, just the
usual assortment of yellow-rumps, chickadees and a few swamp sparrows.
We tried the Wanchese Harbor and the Industrial Park, nary a duck there
either, nor any snipes along Thicket Lump Marina Road, which is usually a
good place to find them.
Alligator River turned up lots of M/F Northern Harriers, lots of Kestrels
and quite a few Swamp Sparrows and Song Sparrows. Another local birder has
turned up some Lincoln's Sparrows along Long Curve Road, but after 120
minutes of pishing and squeaking, we came up empty.
