Dear birders,
I stopped by the Supersod Farm for about 60 minutes today, looking for
Horned
Lark and American Pipit. Here's what I found:
Killdeer (about 50 and well distributed)
Horned Lark 1
American Pipit 8
Northern Harrier 1 Male
Eastern Bluebird 3
Savannah Sparrow 1
Kestrel 1
All the good birds (Lark and Pipits) were seen feeding actively in one spot
where they were harvesting sod. The Pipits were examing the edges of the
stacked sod and even hopping on top of the stacks.
Access to this site is getting limited-there are new gates on the main
roads and
many of the roads on the perimeter are blocked or full of deep holes. I was
nearly stuck in one of these last Fall-the hydraulics of the soil on those
roads is deceptively slick-DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE ON THESE WITHOUT FOUR
WHEEL DRIVE. It's also not a good idea because we want to keep on good terms
with the proprietors. Always check with the office before you drive in.
Good birding,
Steve Compton
