Hi All-
I will be typing up an update of my most recent hummer banding activities
tomorrow AM. However I thought I would let you know that I did stop at Josh
Rose's house today to band the hummer frequenting his feeder. It was a
healthy juvenile female Rufous Hummingbird. She showed up about 15 minutes
after I set up the cage and then went right in to the feeder. She is good
sized and is undergoing a good deal of molt on the dorsal side of her body,
including her gorget. So far she only has three red feathers in her throat
but a good deal of rufous on her flanks and undertail coverts, as Josh has
mentioned.
This hummer rounds out Rufous found in the Triangle area this winter-- with
one each in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary. Wow! Just goes to show
that it is definitely worth keeping a feeder up year round in the Carolinas,
no matter if you are in the mountains, coast or any where in between!!
Many thanks for helping promote winter hummingbird detection and research
this season. Without all of you and the network that is gradually building,
I would not be able to carry out this interesting and valuable work.
