Florence County birding

Hi Carolinabirders,
Gary Phillips, Paul Rogers and myself birded in Florence County, SC today.
I was trying to get a list going for Florence County in the county listing
game in SC. I already had about 12 drive through birds but wanted to get
some birds with a full day of birding there. I id'd 55 with Gary picking
up about three that I didn't see. We birded really only at three places.
1. Outside the gate at the Timmonsville Sewage Pond and a nearby field in
Timmonsville. This proved very frustrating in the AM as we spent about an
hour trying to get into the sewage pond-but the mayor wouldn't let us in.
Something about strict DHEC rules. That did not stop us however as there
is a hill about 100 yards in front of the gate (at Boie Rd about two blocks
west of 76) The light was poor in the am but we could see that there were
hundreds of ducks in the pond but could only id Ruddy Duck. We returned in
the afternoon about 4pm and the light was much better. We found lots of
Ring-necked Ducks, Ruddy Ducks , a few Canvasbacks, and I had one
Scaup-presumably Lesser. This area had lots of Cedar Waxwing, Robins, and
Flickers as well as a few Kinglets of each variety.
We then did this field in Timmonsville thanks to a cooperative landowner
and found Song, Savannah, Swamp, White-throated and Field Sparrows.
Around the big lake on the east side of the junction of I95 and 76 we
found Bald Eagle, Canada Goose, (countable?) Double-crested Cormorant,
Ring-billed Gull, and Chipping Sparrow.
We did about an hour and a half at Lynches River County Park which should
be great in the spring but was very poor today, yielding only
White-breasted Nuthatch, Pileated Woodpecker and a very cooperative Hermit
Thrush. I missed the Fox Sparrow which Gary found there.

	Good birding, good company
