Dear teary, squinty-eyed wren seekers:
Yes, there really are Sedge Wrens in SC this winter. After looking all
over, I found one (maybe two) at Bear Isalnd. I got a good, close-up look at
one at the intersection
of Johnny Hiers Road and Pine Island Road. I played a Screech Owl tape, and
heard
an unfamiliar fuzzy chucking sound. This was unlike the Marsh Wren notes that
I had heard a few hundred yards before, but unlike the "clear" notes
described in the National Geographic guide. Sure enough, a tiny wren slowly
worked his way in through the Sweetgrass until he popped up about 3 feet away.
Bear Island was loaded with quail hunters, whose shotguns boomed all day,
so the waterfowl were scarce-only the two teal species and a few Mallard and
Black ducks. No sign of the Tundra Swans from last year.
Got a report of a large raft of ducks in the surf at Folly Beach-sounds
like Lesser Scaup. Maybe some Scoter will be around-worth a look.
I'll probably go to Santee National WR tommorrow-maybe I'll see you there.
Good birds,
Steve Compton
