introduction

Howdy North Carolina birders!

I just wanted to introduce myself in the middle of
these bird reports. Hope ya don't mind.

My name is Gregg Pasterick and my wife Sheri and I
have been in Asheville since the begining of Sept. We
came from Ohio by way of a 6-month innkeepng gig at a
B and B on Lake Michigan in northern Indiana. (And as
I write this, glancing out the window, I spot a pair
of Red-Tails drifting by in effortless circles...)

In Ohio our birding consisted of backyard birds,
winter trips to an area called Killdeer Plains for a
variety of owls and harriers and Bald Eagles and other
birds of prey, and intensive spring birding,
particularly at Magee Marsh on Lake Erie...

Last spring in Indiana we observed thousands of
Sandhill Cranes at a wildlife area in north central
Indy, and the migrating warblers passed through the
tree tops at the B and B for nearly a month...

...and now we are looking forward to spring in the
mountains, and hope to get some advice from folks on
locations for birds, wildflowers, morels (will anybody
dare reveal such info?) and so on.

I am also a frelance writer and photographer. I have
written nature articles since 1993. From Sept 1999
through August 2000 I was a nature columnist for
weekly papers in Columbus, Ohio and Chesterton, IN, as
well as for a daily in Michigan City, IN. I have been
unable to get into papers in the immediate Asheville
area as a handful of writers have beaten me to the
punch. Any suggestions where I might have better luck
with my columns? My topics have covered warbler
migration, owls, the endangered Karner Blue butterfly,
comet Hale-Bopp, the Perseid and Geminid meteor
showers (I majored in astronomy in college), St
Johns-wort, invasive Purple Loosestrife, chicory,
monarch migration, spring wildflowers, etc... And I
would love contribute locally in NC...

I will be adding highlights from this list, as well as
the Ohio and Indy bird list to my website...

Okie doke then...carry on with the birds...
