HBSP, 2/5



Hi y'all,
    This morning Bob Maxwell, Paul Rogers, Jack Peachey and I wandered
around the north end of Huntington Beach State Park for awhile. We cruised
the beach up to the jetty, walked behind the dunes, peeked into Sandpiper
Pond and scoped the Mullet Pond and causeway. Cloudy and chilly early, skies
cleared and warmed up a bit early afternoon. Kinda slim pickings, but about
60 spp. were found.

Horned Grebe - 1 (drat! I missed it.)

Brown Pelican - 100+

Canada Goose - 1 (northbound, flying high and honking loud over the inlet.)

Gull sp. - 1 Looked smaller than Herring, fresh-looking plumage, mantle
slightly darker than other HEGU, legs gray, bill very yellow, black tip
w/red spot, showed 3 white spots and tip on primaries at rest from both
sides (other HEGUs appeared to show 4 spots plus tip.) Head was nearly
unstreaked except for "smudge" through eye area. Comments?

(Odyssey update - 146. Big misses so far: Western Sandpiper, Sedge Wren.
Grrrr....)
