Yesterday while on Lystra Rd., N. Chatham County, NC, observed a
nice-sized group of Black Vultures beginning to rise on the warm thermals at
11AM. Estimated 18 or so, all BV., while driving very slowly on my way to
the elementary school.
I get to see them most everyday, though usually in a smaller group of
5-6. Think they roost on the powerline that crosses Lystra by the entrance
of my road and Govenor's Club. They are also particularly fond of a dead
multibranched tree along the road.
The other day as I was driving from my home down my gravel rd. towards
Lystra Rd., from the right there appeared all of a sudden10 BVs, they flew in
front of my car for about 1/2 mile down my rd!!, pretty neat, were only just
at tree level, then veered off to the left. When I got to the main rd. I saw
them all sitting on one of the powerline towers together. Cute, never have
had that happen before, though see them regularly flying higher near my house
as they are leaving or returning to there roost.
