Wake Tundra Swans, VA raptors

Took a swing by Greenview Pond in southern Wake County Saturday morning to take
a peek at the pair of Tundra Swans previously reported by John Argentati. Both
birds were present and feeding intently. Amazing how long a swan can hold its
breath! I believe this marks the third year that a (the?) pair of Tundras have
visited Greenview.

Since traffic on C-birds has been sort of slow, I'll go ahead and mention the
results of a weekend venture to the Burke's Garden area in Tazewell County, VA.
Shantanu Phukan and I visited the valley Sunday and saw one immature Golden
Eagle and 2-3 Rough-legged Hawks. One of the hawks was an adult male, and we
were treated to the sight of 2 Rough-leggeds sitting in the same tree! The
Golden was a treat as the bird made a nice, slow transit across the valley and
allowed us to view the plumage for several minutes. Although the weather was
great Sunday, I actually saw more birds during a trip to the same spot 3
weekends ago with Tracy. That voyage resulted in 3 Golden Eagles and 2-3
Rough-leggged Hawks.

As Shantanu and I were sitting in the always-present traffic jam in Greensboro,
we heard a car horn and turned around to see Rick Payne, Judy Murray, & Co.
returning from Burke's Garden as well. From hand gestures I can surmise that
they saw even more birds than we!

Please let me know if anyone desires info or directions on Burke's Garden.

Best,
Steve Shultz
