This is ‘off-topic’ so won’t go into great detail, but
know this topic interests a lot of C-birders. I just returned
from 5 days in SE. La. with 10 other folks searching for
Ivorybilled Woodpeckers. We had no definitive encounters with
the bird but saw great habitat(much of which is inaccessible) and intriguing
tree-work (Three-River WMA looked most promising of the areas we visited).
La.Dept.of F&W ran helicopter transects over
the Pearl River area a week before we arrived hoping to flush out
IBWs, and on Mar. 3 will conduct their final large-scale ground
search there (site of 1999 sighting).
Personally, I’m extremely optimistic about the bird existing at
this point (being seen again by human eyes is a totally separate question
however). If anyone has been contemplating such a trip or otherwise wishes
more details feel free to email me.
