Coddle Creek reservoir & Cowan's Ford Wildlife Refuge 2-24-01

Carolinabirders,

I had the pleasure of birding with a fellow alumnus of the NCSU Wildlife
Science program and recently retired US Fish & Wildlife Service employee
John Hardister. John, a traveled and avid birder, moved back from Denver,
CO this past year and resides in Concord. It was an honor and a privilege
to introduce him to Coddle Creek and Cowan's Ford, especially after he
proved not to be a "jinx". In fact it was a very productive day. Coddle
Creek yielded ruddies, ring-necked ducks, mallards, gadwalls, shovelers,
green-winged teal, buffleheads, hooded mergansers, co-honks, pied-billed
grebe, and a red-tailed hawk. Cowan's Ford provided a pair of bufflehead, a
kestrel, a handsome hunting male harrier that seized a Hispid rodent, a
great-blue heron, a common snipe, a red-shouldered hawk, and yes, a BARRED
OWL that responded to a tape-recorded vocalization.
