Hi Cbirders,
For about a wk. now we've had a yellow-rump guarding
what we call our Marvel Meal feeder. This is one of
those cage set-ups you buy at a bird store to put a
tube feeder in so only small birds can enter and feed;
except we've hung a block of wood with holes drilled
in it for Marvel Meal (a recipe from Birdwatcher's
Digest: 4 cups corn meal; 1 cup each of flour,
shortening, peanut butter--make into a dough). This
attracts a variety of birds , the same ones that come
to suet, but less messy. Since the yellow-rump had
discovered this treat, he's been sitting on top of the
cage guarding the feeder (from all but the Carolina
wren) and aggressively running off all the other
birds. He (or she?) even make aggressive forays at
birds feeding on the seed tube feeders nearby. The
poor house finches and goldfinches are constantly
harassed! Oh well, spring is upon us and he'll be
leaving soon>
Also can report a chickadee with nesting material
entering a nest box--this was about on the 22nd.
OUr cardinals are singing spring songs.
