The Sandhill Crane the I saw on Thursday and Bob and Wayne saw on Friday was
still here on Sunday. It was flying overhead in the same area of Henderson
County (southern NC mountains) between Ladson Road and the French Broad
River. This time I heard it before I saw it. It landed in a corn field
adjacent to the river between the spot where Ladson and Banner Farm Road meet
and the river. These fields are quite large, so it is a bit difficult to see
the bird except when it is flying. There's just too much field too pick
through and they aren't all accessible.
I also saw the Marsh Wren that Wayne saw last week, so who knows what
that bird is doing. I assume it was the same bird as it was in the same
place. Also saw the first Tree Swallow for the year in Henderson County,
although they have been in neighboring Transylvania County for a few days.
I stopped by Lake Julian to check on the Canvasback that Wayne reported,
but they were already all gone by 2pm. Only one Redhead left. Such is the
way with Lake Julian.
