My parents and I went up to the goose ponds near Garyburg, NC today at
dawn. A few Ring-necked Ducks (20) were still there, but not as many
as previously noted. Canada Geese, a few Mallards, a few Hooded
Mergs, and a Pied-billed Grebe were also seen.
After looking at the goose ponds, we continued to Vultare Wildlife
Commission boat landing on the north side of Roanoke Rapids lake. An
immature Bald Eagle was at the pond near the 6 chicken houses on the
way there, so. side hwy 46, plus 3 Gadwall and 2 Hooded Mergs.
Ruddy Ducks and Ring-necked Ducks were seen in large numbers (at least
2000 of each spread across the lake) at Vultare. Coot (>100),
Bufflehead (>10, far away), Canvasbacks (~5), a Green-winged Teal,
D-c. Cormorants, and Ring-billed Gulls were seen as well. A flock of
passerines yielded an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Creeper, kinglets,
etc. in the marsh grasses west of the boat launch. The passerines
moved off to the west.
