When I followed the link that Alison Wells mentioned in her post about
the Great Backyard Bird Count http://www.birdsource.org I noticed a
graphic inviting Harry Potter fans to track Harry Potter's owl ("Hedwig"
the Snowy Owl). Since I'm a big fan (and a 55-year-old birder), I
clicked on the link first.
Sure enough, there's a section with information on various owls. In
addition, there is a photo of young "Harry Potter" with his Snowy Owl on
his arm -- which offers a nice idea of the size of the Snowy Owl.
BTW, one of the best scenes in the Harry Potter movie shows *dozens* of
owls! Even assuming that most of them are computer-generated, it's
still an impressive show!
The website also offers interesting maps showing birds in various
regions (according to the species & region you choose). The 1999-2001
maps "loop" one after the other for yearly comparisons. (I'm sure I
didn't describe that correctly, but it's still pretty cool.)
