Birders,
While searching for butterflies in Randolph and Montgomery Counties (near
and in the Uwharrie Mts in NC), Harry LeGrand and I had a few notable
birds, today (24 Mar 02).
Black and White Warbler -- one singing at Ridges Mt. (breeder of migrant?)
Yellow-throated Warbler -- a couple here and there
Purple Finch -- a couple at Ridges Mt. singing, and a few at Birkhead in
the Uwharries
Rusty Blackbird -- a surprise was a half-dozen of these at a nice upland
depression at Ridges Mt.
(Also, I had a Common Yellowthroat singing at the impoundment at O'Kelly
Chapel Rd. by Jordan Lake on my way home.)
In addition to the birds, we enjoyed some cool herps:
"Blue-tailed" Skink -- 1 at Ridges Mt.
Worm Snake -- 1 at Ridges Mt.
Green Anole -- 2 (one brown, one green) at Birkhead at NW edge of range
N. Cricket Frog -- 1 seen at Birkhead
Upland Chorus Frogs -- heard hear and there
And at O-Kelly Chapel Rd., in Chatham Co., near Jordan Lake I heard
several frogs -- Upland Chorus, Spring Peepers, and Southern Leopard.
Good Birding (& herping)!
