Once and only once a Pileated visited my suet feeder. Compared to the
usual Downies, Carolina Wrens, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers, the Pileated struck me as if - say - all 7'4" of Wilt
Chamberlain was eating from a child's tea set! I had my usual suet out, a
commercial preparation of what amounts to very finely ground peanuts held
together by just enough fat to make a cake. It has proven quite popular
with the birds - everything from the expected Downies to unexpected Pine
Warblers and Gray Catbirds have feasted on that suet through the years.
