This evening I noted the season's first woodcock courtship displays here in
southern Wake County, NC. Several birds could be heard making the buzzy
"peenting" calls, followed by the more musical flight displays. We normally
begin to see and hear displays at about this time of the year. Although
convential wisdom dictates woodcock displays as a harbinger of spring, here
in the balmy south, they are more a harbinger of winter (since it's
technically still fall!). If anyone needs a year, life, or state woodcock,
you're more than welcome to come out for a peek.
Best,
Steve Shultz
