Brian Pendergraft was kind enough to haul me up to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Tunnel today.
While slightly outside the Carolinas geographically, many C-birders visit
the CBBT regularly (in fact we met Cynthia Fox's WBC field trip today) so I
hope a post on the subject won't cause any ruckus...
A pleasant weather day usually means fewer birds, and today was a prime
example. The large numbers of birds reported during the cold snap seem to
have moved on, but those birds remaining hung close by for drop-dead
gorgeous views. We even got to see the iris/pupil color of a Harlequin
Duck!
Here's the rundown:
#1- about 500 scaup, including several Greater, Oldsquaw, Black and Surf
Scoters, Purple Sandpipers, RB Mergs, Great Cormorant
#2 - same, less the scaup
#3 - add White-winged Scoter and Harbour Seal
#4 - #3 plus Common Goldeneye, Harlequin Duck, Lesser Black Backed Gull
Also had a Merlin near Seaboard, NC on the way up.
Nice day!!
Have a great week,
