Invent your way to a fortune!!!!!!!!!!!! The Monsanto Corporation is offering a $1 million dollar prize to anyone or any team that develops the most cost-effective and commercially practical technology for recovering ammonia from certain industrial waste streams, in particular, waste water streams containing ammonia, ammonium salts and organic compounds. This happens to be a common and troublesome problem for the chemical industry. Proposals must be submitted to Monsanto by December 31, 1994. They will be evaluated by an independent group of experts from the Center for Waste Reduction Technologies (part ofthe American Institute of Chemical Engineers). The proposal that most effectively meets the criteria will be funded with $500,000 for one year of development. A second $500,000 payment will be made following successful demonstration of this technology in a continuous laboratory unit. The winner will receive the first $500,000 in the first quarter of 1995. The winner will develop the proposed technology and demonstrate its capability to treat at least one pound per hour of waste stream in a continuous laboratory unit. The company will then award $500,000 more as a prize. Monsanto typically generates such waste streams at the rate of 300 gallons per minute, and the presence of organics prevents the easy conversion of the ammonia into nitrogen fertilizer.
