I just came across a nice book on biotechnology patent law. The book is titled: "Pharmaceuticals Biotechnology & the Law" ISBN 1-56159-040-1 830 pages $170 by Trevor Cook, Catherine Doyle & David Jabbari of Cook & Cook available from Stockton Press, 257 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010 It's a good book covering regulatory control, intellectual property rights (patents, chemical patents, drug & medical patents, biotechnology patents), technology agreements, research protocols, licensing, commercialization, trademarks, patent infringement, product liability and general law. One attraction of the book is that the authors work for a London law firm, and the book has a definite European Community slant, which is great given the paucity of information in the US on EC intellectual property rights. A nice historial explanation for the separation of the claims from the specification is given (from a case in the House of Lords), the British version of broad coverage ("purposive construction"), and observations on the US Doctrine of Equivalents. For EC perspectives on European Community patent practices, I recommend the book. Greg Aharonian Internet Patent News Service
