UNITED STATES PERMACULTURE DIRECTORY ==================================== http://ibiblio.org/permaculture/uspcdirectory.faq BIOS Designs Chuck Estin of Bios Designs http://biosdesign.us/ writes about permculture in his website: "BIOS is Greek for LIFE. As human designers we can look to the life forms in Nature for guidance in creating sustainable systems. Life forms are by definition sustainable, or they wouldn’t exist." "Permaculture is a way to create healthy communities of people, plants and animals. Permaculture uses principles of Nature to empower people to connect to the ecosystem in which they live. It has many disciplines and skill-sets; Efficient agriculture, agro-forestry, aquaculture, natural building, solar technology, education, alternative economics, and more." "Bios Design is a consultancy for creating functioning systems at many levels: from an edible landscape, to an integrated farm, to a healthy community. We utilize permaculture principles that derive from functioning natural systems, and we address a variety of potential domains, including sustainable agriculture, water catchment, appropriate energy technologies, ponds, livestock, agro-forestry and alternative economics. Reviewing the fundamental platform of permaculture will help you to better understand Bios Design’s mission, process, and practice in nursery management and design." [The permaculture nursery:] http://biosdesign.us/nursery "Our Permaculture Nursery has a diverse selection of perennial fruit & nut trees, fruiting shrubs & vines, and perennial vegetables. In addition to our ample inventory of conventional fruit and nut trees, berries and vines, we develop cultivate a unique collection of permaculture all-stars from homologous climates worldwide." <> Norris Thomlinson Portland, OR Farmer Scrub Blog http://farmerscrub.blogspot.com Discount Permaculture http://discountpermaculture.com books and seeds (pickup or mail order) and plants (pickup only in Portland, OR) edible trees, shrubs, and vines <> Austin Permaculture Guild Austin, TX, USA www.austinperm.com / 512-619-5363 Permaculture Design Certificate courses; community events; speakers' bureau <> The Old Stone House, a public permaculture demonstration site in Brooklyn, NYC. Claudia Joseph The Old Stone House Park Slope, Brooklyn permie@earthlink.net www.permaculture-exchange.org www.theoldstonehouse.org 336 3rd Street Brooklyn, New York 11215 (718) 768-3195 The site is located between 4th and 5th Avenues and 3rd and 4th Street. This historic house is in Washington Park, a 3 acre site that is much used for outdoor play and other family activities. The House itself is a neighborhood center and gathering point for meetings, music, theater, film, arts and events. Starting in 2004 and partnered with the adjacent middle school, MS 51 since 2005, the site now includes 8 garden spaces. These gardens are filled with useful plants for public education and enjoyment. Our interpretive history programs include food, medicinal, craft and habitat plants. This site is located 2 blocks from the superfund site the Gowanus Canal, a real irony since Park Slope is one of the nicer neighborhoods in NYC. The site was long neglected and has only recently been revitalized. We are putting in the public eye a new model for soil building with on-site materials, food foresting and naturalized landscapes of useful plants, as well as a farm garden. I have taught 3 PDC's using this site for our design projects. This site is open every day of the week. Six blocks north, the Garden of Union, hosts an impressive compost system consisting of 7 "super-bins" that process 14+ tons of material annually - about half of PSFC's output. GOU works with the Park Slope Food Coop 2 blocks up-slope to create this public model. PSFC is one of the largest food coops in the country with 15,000 members. The garden receives waste from the produce isle and coop workers bring and process it. About 50 individual garden members also participate in the system. The garden composts all of it's waste material and is abundant and healthy even though it is built on a rubble site.It has been an organic garden since its inception in 1973. It is also one of the only communally operated gardens in the NYC community garden system. see www.thegardenofunion.com Our rules were reworked in 2005 after 2 years of consensus based conversation. I have been president of the Garden of Union for the past 6 years and I coordinate the compost program as my Coop work- shift. The Garden is open only during open hours or if a member is in the garden. <> Rhonda Baird, permaculture teacher (pdc's and introductions); permaculture design consultant.
