On
the 2nd in a press interview the President stated that he had sent us an
inquiry that day concerning our increasing troops in French Indo-China.
Expressing his own views for the first time, he briefly stated that the trend
of Japanese-American negotiations for the past few days and our rumored
increasing of troops in southern French Indo-china had both thrown obstacles in
the way of the progress of the negotiations (see special intelligence from
Washington). This was the first interview since returning from Warm Springs,
and particular attention is to be paid to the fact that he referred directly to
negotiations.
