Hrm. *** Food 99 Miles to Philly 94 3rd Avenue New York, NY 10003 http://www.99milestophilly.net/ 212-253-2700 99 miles to philly makes the best cheesesteak in New York (it's 99 miles to Philly from their front door). They have a pretty small menu; they know what they are, what they do well, and they stick to it. Barney Greengrass - New York, NY 541 Amsterdam Ave. New York, NY 212-724-4707 Food trends come and go, great New York bakeries have vanished, and it is harder and harder to find a good babka on the upper West Side. Barney Greengrass still has these dense, sweet cakes that go so well with coffee; and although babka is not the main attraction, we cannot come to this storefront restaurant without one to take home. The food that put Barney Greengrass on the map is smoked fish. In the glass case of this restaurant and take-out store, you will find lean, silky sturgeon, salty cured salmon (known as lox), not-so-salty cured salmon (novie), snow-white whitefish, and luscious sable. At the tables in the dining room adjacent to the takeout counter, all these fish are available on platters, with bagels and/or bialys, cream cheese, onions, tomatoes, and olives. These are the makings of a true New York breakfast; there isn.t a restaurant in town that does it with the aplomb of bare-tabled Barney Greengrass. Ben Benson's - New York, NY (Pricey but tasty steak) 123 W. 52nd St. Between 6th and 7th Avenues New York, NY http://www.benbensons.com/ 212-581-8888 Sip a dry martini and plow into a basket of raisin bread and hard-crusted dinner rolls while perusing a long, interesting menu that includes a fascinating .prime rib steak,. cut like a slab of prime rib, but marinated and then grilled like a steak. Note also the salads, which are first-class, especially Ben Benson.s .special salad,. a gigantic heap of cool, finely chopped marinated vegetables and . unless you say otherwise . many bits of anchovy. There is roast beef hash on Thursday; and the shrimp scampi amd crab cakes are some of the best we.ve had anywhere; but it.s the classic cuts of steak that reign in this dining room. You will not find a better sirloin . charred on the outside, firm-bodied, and packed with the flavorful juice that dry-aging cultivates. Hash browns are speckled with bits of onion and pepper, but if you like them extra-crisp, be sure to tell the waiter; otherwise, they arrive as a big, soft cake of spuds. As creamed spinach devotees, we can tell you that Ben Benson.s is some of the best anywhere; and if you.re on a diet (why are you HERE?), the simple baked potato is gorgeous. Cafe Edison 228 W. 47th Street New York, NY 10036 212-840-5000 Located near Times Square "Known to regulars as "The Polish Tea Room," this is a delicious taste of old New York that seems utterly unaffected by the Disneyfication of Times Square. So if you find yourself midtown craving Jewish food served without pomp or pretense, find a booth or a counter seat and savor braised brisket or kasha varnishkes, pickled herring or homemade gefilte fish, or blintzes that some experts consider the city's best. Prices are moderate, the food is good, and the experience is unforgettable. " Oyster Bar (Grand Central Station) Grand Central Terminal New York, NY 10017 212-490-6650 "The pan roast is a signature dish of the oyster bar. It is an old-fashioned bisque served in a broad bowl, built around your favorite kind of seafood: oysters, cherrystone or Ipswich clams, shrimp, lobster, scallops, or any combination thereof. The slightly spicy, very creamy stew is ballasted by a thick piece of toast." Note: service may be lousy, but, hey, it's in Grand Central. Patsy's Pizzeria - New York, NY 2287 First Ave. New York, NY 10035 212-534-9783 The place is a true destination restaurant, way uptown in a place that is not exactly "restaurant row." It's ancient, going back to 1933 when Pasquale Lancieri first opened for business; and it has the well-aged character of a neighborhood restaurant that hasn't changed even as the neighborhood around it has. We were especially charmed by waiter Victor, who advised us that in his opinion, "98% of the pizza places in New York aren't worth walking past." Wolfgang's - New York, NY (Steak for dinner, anyone?) 4 Park Ave. New York, NY 10016 http://www.wolfgangssteakhouse.com/ 212-889-3369 $75 per person for lunch is not exactly typical Roadfood, but if your goal is to savor restaurants unique to their region, Wolfgang's steak house on Park Avenue in New York is essential. Opened by Wolfgang Wiener, former headwaiter at Peter Luger's in Brooklyn, this pricey place is an only-in-New York eating experience. And one of the last survivors of what was once bookstore row. For the feel of old New York, it's definitely worth a visit.
