A Bibliography of Southeastern Woody Plants
(Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines)

Peter S. White
May 2001

This bibliography includes the most important literature on the identification and distribution of woody plants in the Southeast, including the states of Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas (eastern part only), Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky.  Only the latest edition of works published in several editions are listed.  The works selected are inclusive and comprehensive.  For example, guides to “common” trees (vs. a reasonable attempt to include all species) are not included, nor are short popular works to selected species.  Works that include more taxa (e.g., non-woody plants) or areas outside the Southeast are only included if they are deemed essential for checking the identification or distribution of Southeastern woody plants.

The bibliography is divided into General References, Southeastern Regional References (the entire Southeast is treated), and States (including Southern Appalachian References that cover parts of Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia.
