[March 31, 1997] Note to readers: On Sunday, Ascend Communications
(NASDAQ:ASND) agreed to acquire Cascade (CSCC) for stock valued at about
$3.7 billion, each share of CSCC traded for 0.7 share of ASND. The merger
combines Ascend's remote networking strength with Cascade's broadband data
communications and switching products. The on-going consolidation at this
level (infrastructure) may work its way into pure play "Internet" companies
(components and ISPs) once this 'meta level' consolidation finishes.
